Here's the choices. You can comment on rifles outside of these but let's face it it ain't likely gonna happen. The AK74 has been serving well for about a year now, but it's about three inches longer than ideal. I know the brake is what's doing it but I had to have it and back then the few extra inches didn't matter.

Still doesn't all that much now but makes getting it in and out of it's spot a tad harder. I've been thinking about trying something new. First thought about my FR8 but it's actually pretty damn long compare to the AK74 so that's out.

Gotta remember overall replacement cost when doing this too incase it ever gets stolen or illegally confiscated by overzealous police. It is 100% legal to do so in my state as long as it's unloaded. Then I try my M4 look a like AR15 and after removing my Reflex and getting the carry handle back out the size and weight is perfect but that's whole lot more money involved and I don't have a good way to carry the two twenty round mags and strippers to re-charge them. This rifle just feels so much better when using the twenty round mags and I only have two GI ones right now so that explains the stripper clips. All the rest that I own hold thirty rounds.

Have any thoughts? I'm pretty sure I'm staying with the AK74, but I just thought I'd put this out there for anything that I haven't yet considerd and also just felt like posting a few pics as it's been awhile.

Thanks,
-M

I delight in ridin' around in my pickemuptruck with my Bushy and SAR1 proudly in the rack.  This coupled with my various incindiary bumper stickers makes for fun when watchin' people behind me at a light and what not.  Perfectly legal here also as long as they're unloaded, so of course I leave empty mags in 'em.  It also seems the cops actually know it's legal, 'cause I've had 'em behind me smack dab in the middle of downtown and never gotten any grief yet.  Of course, the truck is NEVER unattended when i do this!  But man, it sure is fun!

Stay the course.  Go the distance.  Purchase the Bulgarian mags (and one or more Cobras).  I sold my two AR prebans and bought four of these:

Since this is the AR board, I will tell you I'm getting AR-10s, since I think that's where this system REALLY shines.

Brouhaha-
That's a Bulgie brake from Global. It uses an AR15 threaded adapter all perm installed. Looks more authentic than the Romey brake. Thanks!

That looks cool.

I'd hate to lose any of those to a common thief. For a true truck gun, I'd consider a $59.99 Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine. Should be enough gun to deal with anything you are likely to come across.
