free floating simply means that the barrell is not touching any part of the stock and has no outside influences affecting it. such as sling swivels or mounts.

any rifle will benefit from it to a point. Bull barrells typically do very well free floated. Thin barrells may or may not. Due to the thickness of pencil barrells they sometimes actually need a contact point to support them or correct the harmonics. Keep in mind most rifles will outshoot the average shooter with good ammo. A .22 will be hard to get excellent consistant ammo without spending a ton. bulk box ammo for 9.00 a brick won't cut it.

For example my stock 10/22 held about a 6-7 inch group at 50 yrds. I replaced the barrell with a fluted bull barrell and replaced the stock with a butler creek free floated stock. It now will do under 1 inch at 50 and if the wind is right 2 or less at 100.

With a rimfire, you free-float the ACTION, and bed the barrel, exactly the opposite of a center-fire rifle.
