This seems like a pretty cool car.  It's supposed to be based off of Subaru's rally car.  It's AWD, 227HP 4 cyl engine, manual transmission, etc.  Any of you have experience with Subaru in general?  Are they any good?

Thanks,
Chimborazo

An aquaintance has a WRX. She likes it. Fast, quick, slightly high cabin noise.

Subaru is supposed to have an even faster version in the works. The aftermarket guys are just getting going with bolt-on stuff like extra turbo boost.

I had an Impreza - loved it, until I plowed it into the back of a semi.  The WRX looks cool - if I were in the market for a car, I'd definitely consider another Subaru.

There pretty quick. Give my Taurus SHO a workout. I personally hate the looks of the WRX. They should of kept or improved on the 2.5 RS bodystyle, just put the suspension and drivetrain, etc. in it instead. Does anyone else feel the same way about the WRX bodystyle?
I think its very ugly.
Turbo's give you an amazing base to start modding though.

I have no direct working knowledge of the WRX, but growing up, rode in and drove my mother's Subaru AWD wagon. She had it for the better part of 12 years.

Although the WRX sound MUCH more sophisticated than the Subarus of old, one thing I always appreciated was they were the type of car that come hell or highwater, a piece of masing tape and a screwdriver could just about fix anything, and get you going again.  Much like the OLD Volkswagon Beetles.

I think you'll be happy!  Go for it!!

It's a quick, loud, corner-hugging ride.  What I'd call "porn-star ugly", it's beauty is the way it moves.  I chose the Acura RSX Type S over the WRX for looks and creature comforts.  Just can't bring myself to buy a 4-door yet.

I agree, I think the 2.5RS it much better looking.  Personally I'm a torque junkie but as far as factory 4 cylinders go I really like  the Impreza.

I taught my brother how to drive his
after I talked him into getting a stick.

It actually has a lot of head/leg room
for such a small car.

Thanks for the replies.  I may not be able to afford a new car for a little bit (just bought a house, and getting married in Sept.), so I might end up waiting for the next WRX.  I considered the Accura RSX Type S, but I need a four door so I can load the dog, etc.  I really want something reliable.  Right now I have a '96 VW Passat with the VR6 and manual tranny with 62,000 miles.  In the past 12 months, I've had to put $1500 into it just for stupid but costly stuff.  Too many damn Audi parts.  As a result, I'm looking for something that's Toyota reliable.

an excellent car; i'd have bought it if it was around $15,ooo or so (i know 15k is ridiculously unrealistic). it's a fun car to drive and that's about it. after the novelty wears off you probably wish you bought a Nissan Altima. :)

my point is at $23,000, there are better cars out there! Ex. Nissan Altima :D

HOLY CRAP!  That Altima 3.5 SE looks pretty sweet.  240HP, 5-Speed tranny, and just a little more expensive than the WRX.  Nissans are pretty reliable too aren't they?

I don't know what you are talking about!  We've owned 2 Infinitis, 3 Maximas and 2 Altimas, only the 2000 Maxima had a problem which was fixed under warranty.  Toyota and Honda has had a trend of producing boring, bland and uninspiring cars recently, so I'll definately stick with the Maxima which can be propelled by a 260hp with 6sp manual!  Eats up the Acura TL-S.

Get the Subaru! The WRX is awsome. But you might want to wait untill they start shipping with the 6 Speed.  Subarus have good quality too.

You might want to take a look at the Mitsubishi Lancer EvoVII. Its a bit more like the Acura RS as far as luxury.

I have a plain jane legacy that just turned 120,000 miles and at this point I don't think it will ever stop running.  No sign of trouble.  Now that I said that, I will probably be replacing the engine next week...

One thing I like about it is the steering.  Not quite as nice as my 97 BMW 3-series was, but surprisingly close.  Not bad...

Given the house purchase, impending nuptuals and the need for a 4-door, I'd just like to echo MinMan72's comments about the Nissan Maxima.

A 97/98 Maxima SE will give you all you want: reliability, incredible bang for the $ and great performance in a 4-door that's a wolf in sheep's clothing.

It is a blast to drive. It doesn't have quite the refinements of some other cars but it is a pure performer. If you want to road rally or just always drive like a bat outta hell, then get it ASAP. If you only want to drive fast occasionally then it will be a waste of a really cool sports car.
