Its not only paid for by the government, its given to government run universities where liberal elites perform all of the research.  Are you surprised that the only answer they ever have is to tax American industry out of business, for the good of the world.  Also if their research finds there is no problem the funding stops, so there is always a crisis around the corner.

Do you really think private industry is paying global warming research and the like?

Lets go ahead an cut all science and funding, and let Russia, China, and the EU continue to fund their research, and in 30 years lets see how we compete...

Almost all groundbreaking science is performed by industry. From computer technology, the Genome Project (DNA mapping), medical technology, etc. all private.

Obviously the .gov isn't spending enough or you would have learned from your science class in school to present evidence when you make a claim.

Your mainly right... but just a note.  The Humane Genome Project had TONS of public funding.

The .gov can (and should, in my view) fund some basic science that cannot be effectively funded privately.  See: NASA.

Basic technology advanacements are a matter of national security (economic and military), in my view.

Science is a bunch of complicated gobbledygook.  I, for one, would prefer to scrape the dirt with my fingers for food, worship the sun, and die of old age at 35.

???

It doesn't cost anything to go to a public library.  And many journals are online with free access (like Journal of Biological Chemistry, for example).

Depends on your definition of groundbreaking.  If you mean applied research translating discoveries into marketable products, then yes.  That's what industry does.  If you mean fundamental, basic, how does it work research, then no.  How many Nobel and Lasker Prizes have gone to people for work they did in an industrial setting?  The groundbreaking work is done in academics.  Industry then develops the application.

Recombinant DNA technology?  Wasn't discovered in industry.

Cholesterol biosynthesis?  Wasn't discovered in industry, but all the big drug companies make a statin.

Invention of the cardiopulmonary bypass machine?  Not industry.

Hemodialysis?  Not industry.

The basic science that the government is funding now is what will lead to the medical breakthroughs 10-20 years from now.  In addition, most of the high powered researchers in big pharma started in academics.

Science and technology is what makes nations powerful.  If the U.S.A. wants to stay the world leader it must stay ahead of every other nation technologically.  Just because math is hard and physics doesn't make any sense to you does not mean that it is useless or a waste of money.
