Do I have to fill out any forms if I buy my gun at a gun show?

If its from a FFL Dealer - Yes
If from a nother Joe - NO

Are there any free States can I go to if I want to buy a gun (SIG P226 in 9mm), without filling out any government forms (like the 4473).

To buy a gun in another state, you must comply with the laws in your home state, so the answer is no, any firearm you buy in another state must go through a California FFL.

That's a federal law BTW. Any time a firearm transaction crosses state lines, the purchaser must comply with the laws in his or her home state, and transfer through a FFL in his or her home state. You could buy a gun without paperwork in AZ, NV, WA, ID, or UT, but you must be a legal resident of that state, which you aren't. Sorry, but that's the way it is. I would never recommend you do something ILLEGAL in a public forum, and nobody else should either, right westman431? [rolleyes]

Just to clarify on that point, not that I'm considering doing anything unlawful, but just out of CURIOSITY do they require that you present a state ID or driver's license in those states if you buy from a gun show?

Well I was actually born in Little Rock, Arkansas, but my family moved out to CA when I was 2 years old, so I've been living here ever since.

Now I have my own family, and I've been considering moving to one of the mountain states, maybe Wyoming, Utah, or Arizona.

I'll tell you what though, I resent having to fill out a government form and go through a Nazi backround check in order to "qualify" for my RIGHT to self-defense.

It is federal law that a handgun can ONLY be purchased in your state of residence, while complying with all state/local laws. Federally, you may buy long guns, from a dealer, in states that are contiguous to your state of residence. State laws may, or may not, allow this. Most do. If you go out of state to buy, be honest and up front about your non-resident status. Do not put anyone in a position to break laws. The consequences are too great. If you really want to know, call the nearest ATF office, or check their website, which I do not have handy.

Buying a firearm in the state of California requires a 4473 with very few exceptions (receiving it via in-state family member being one of them). If you have machining skills, you can get a Sig frame from tannery_shop and build it up. otherwise, enjoy the new 4473. Instead of yes, 8 no's and a yes, it's now different, so don't trip up. Oh, and write "yes" or "no", not "y" or "n" so the handwriting analysis department gets a better sample of your handwriting.

Are you sure the continguous part is Federal law? I know some states will only let you buy long guns in states that share a border with them, but I've always been under the impression that long gun can go between two residents of any states as long as state laws are respected. I distinctly remember gun dealers in PA told a friend of mine from Florida that there was no trouble selling him a long gun of any sort with his FL ID.

Pardon me, you are correct. This has not been an issue for me, so I am using information in effect at the time I obtained my FFL, years ago. I looked it up and the law now reads:

In addition, a licensee may sell a rifle or shotgun to a person who is not a resident of the State where the licensee's business premises is located in an over-the-counter transaction, provided the transaction complies with State law in the State where the purchaser resides and provided the sale complies with all applicable federal laws.

unfortunately you live in the PRK, so yore f*cked.

personally i am looking to move to vermont so i can purchase a pistol. one avenue i was considering (and that has been done in the Kalif. situation) is to purchaseout of state and store the weapon there untill you have legal residency.

so i could goto Vermont buy a handgun, and store it in say a safety deposit box there. and this would be legal so long as i never took it into NY.

but this is kinda shakey i think. someone will correct me i am sure.

so for now i will just drool, and bide my time untill i can move. after that its no holds barred..
