So far the last 3 episodes of Star Wars have not been released by Lucas.  I don't know what's taking them so long but they need to get on the damn ball.

Oh yeah, here are a couple of suggestions.

1. Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead
2. Godfather 1,2,3
3. Gone in 60 Seconds (kicks ass with surround sound)
4. Fifth Element (Just for the surround sound)
5. Pulp Fiction

Let's see, what do we have:

Party Time with Bear in the Big Blue House.
Sesame Street: 123 Count with Me
Book of Pooh
Mickey Mouse in Living Color
Rugrats in Paris
The Powerpuff Girls:  Powerpuff Bluff
The Powerpuff Girls:  Down and Dirty
The Powerpuff Girls:  The Mane Event
The Powerpuff Girls:  Meet the Beat Alls

OK seriously, how about:

The Lost Battalion.  That film should have gotten a lot more attention than it did.
The Bridge on the River Kwai (Collector Edition)  Amazon has it for a substantial disccount.

Ronin

Have Red Dawn, awesome to see it widescreen again.

The Spec. Ed. of Mad Max is a must have.  Whole different movie in OAR and with the origional voices.  The commentary is pretty entertaining as well.

Desperado Superbit.  Damn fun gun movie.

No original Star Wars movies will be out for at least a couple years, when the prequels are done according to rumors.

LOTR will be awesome when it comes out in August.  In Nov. a spec. ed. will be out with 30 min. more footage cause the original wasn't long enough.

Of course now you need a kick ass sound system with large subwoofer and an HDTV and you're all set.

Almost forgot:  I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!, great 10 dollar DVD.

Robocop

Predator with DTS

American Pie

and Fight Club.

Episodes 4, 5 and 6 from the Starwars series will be released on DVD. But Lucas made it his point to release them only after the DVD releases of Episode 2(coming soon in the theaters) and Episode 3.

Which basicly puts the original trilogy on release announced somewhere in 2004.

Probably be an ultimate edition pack(with more screens unshown) and an additional Ep. 1,2,3 pack with added scenes.(mind you Episode 1 DVD already has added scenes not in the original movie.)

That's Lucasfilm marketing for you.

My must have's

BlackHawk Down (when released)
We were Soldieres (when released)
The original SW trilogy (whenever released)

Hamburger Hill
Platoon
Full metal jacket(hate the fact it was released in it's original 4:3 format though).
Heat
Bringing out the dead(EMT's/Paramedics should love this movie).
Terminator2 ultimate edition.

and so on..

Not to sound like a cowboy, but in all the machismo on this site, the overlooking of JOHN WAYNE is an abomination. I realize that DVD will probably not do much to improve any of the too numerous to mention titles, but what movie collection could be complete without The Duke?

Well, pardon me for being a critic, but I see a lot of lousy recommendations here.  Let me provide a few rules on things to AVOID:

(1) All sequels or movies with I, II, III, IV, or V in the title.  The ONLY exception to this is the Godfather II.

(2) Any movie starring Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, Bruce Willis, Marlon Brando, or Mike Meyers.

(3) There is a corresponding list of lousy/wierd female actresses, but since you at least generally get to see some TnA I will omit it.

(4) Rio Bravo

Here are a few DVDs that I think are worth having:

WAR
--------------------
The Patriot
Last of the Mohicans
Shenandoah
Run Silent, Run Deep
Patton
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Tora Tora Tora
Midway
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon
Full Metal Jacket
Good Morning Vietnam
The Dogs of War
Heartbreak Ridge
Mr. Roberts
Dr. Strangelove

SCI-FI
---------------------
The Thing (original from 50s)
The Thing (John Carpenter)
Invasion From Mars (original from 50s)
They Live
Seven Days in May
Mad Max
The Road Warrior
Predator
The Terminator
Contact
Dr. Strangelove

WESTERNS
--------------------
The Shootist
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence
The Big Country
The Magnificent Seven
The Wild Bunch
Pale Rider
The Unforgiven
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

BAD GUYS
--------------------
The Godfather I and II
Goodfellas
Get Shorty
Pulp Fiction
Resevoir Dogs
Fargo
Silence of the Lambs

MISC
--------------------
Braveheart
Gladiator
American Beauty
Hunt for Red October
Red Dawn
The Quiet Man
The Right Stuff
Cool Hand Luke
The Sting
The Graduate
Dr. Strangelove

Jeez, I could go on with this all day.  Hope this helps. [;)]

Willow? Blech!

And that last lethal weapon was very anti-second amendment, so scratch that recommendation.

Not listed yet:

The Man who would be king (Afghanistan!)
Excalibur
King of New York
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (for Alan Rickman's performance)

Have to go through my collection for more ideas. Sadly the Japanese "Heaven and Earth" is only available on VHS, and oop and hard to find at that. Perhaps Ran and other Kurosawa films will have to tide you over. Wish they'd put out "Wild Geese" on dvd as well, dammit!

Boomer, I no speak with forked tongue.  Cruise overacts... terribly.  He's a scientologist, which means he's an idiot.  And the "Top Gun" script was one of the worst of its time.  The technical errors alone would fill a good sized tome, and the story line belongs more in the cartoon genre than the dramatic movie genre.

Example of numerous technical errors:  At the end of the movie when Maverick is launched to join the dogfight in progress 110 miles away he states he will be there in 30 seconds.  That's a 13,200 mph (mach 18) Tomcat he's flying. [rolleyes]

marvl, complaining about Top Gun's technical inaccuracies is like complaining about those in The Patriot.  I watch the history channel for factual info, and the movies for entertainment.  Generally I watch the first and last thirty minutes of Top Gun.  I think the aerial sequences are great.
Link Posted: 3/14/2002 7:45:15 AM EDT
[#49]
Houston,  I agree somewhat.  I'll accept a certain amount of "poetic license", as when martial arts sequences are filmed with the players dangling from wires.  But there is a point beyond which a lack of accuracy and credibility destroy the entertainment value of the film.  For instance, if Mel Gibson's men in the Patriot were all armed with M16s you probably would have walked out. [:)]

I love watching Tomcats fly as well as the next guy.  If you cut out everything except the aerial sequences, you've got an excellent 10-minute movie.

I did. Following your line of reasoning about 'Top Gun' exactly how realistic did you find the ambush sequence where Mel and his two sons decimate the redcoats? Reloaded just a little too fast, didn't they?
