I'm guessing that initially the Green Berets only recruited within the Army ranks?  I know that you can apply for SEALS right after Navy boot.

I think in the ARMY You had to do this.

BOOT
School
Rangers 2 yrs
Airborne 2 yrs
Then you could try out for the Green Berets and then after you have been a Green Beret for so long you might be asked to join Delta???

But that is just if I remember Correctly??

I don't think they should change that. But I guess the Nation needs them Bad.

If they are going to go directly?? What is the tmeline??? How can they bypass all the experience that those soldier usually have?? Won't the Casualty rate go up substantially??

Not quite

I got out of the army in late 1999 and it was working like this:
1. Complete Basic Combat Training
2. Complete Advanced Individual Training (These intial two steps could be combined, depending on military occupational speciality, into OSUT)
3. Advance to the rank of E-4 (Specialist/Corporal).
4. Complete DA 4187 (request for training) to attend Special Forces Assesment and Selection.
5. Attend and successfully compelete SFAS and hopefully be selected for the Special Forces Qualification Course. If the soldier is not airborne qualified, then they have to go to Airborne school prior to going to the Q course. That is a pretty rough, but accurate overview of the process.

Selection for Delta force was typically done among NCO's who had had a combat tour, or who were in or are currently in a combat arms MOS- but was also open to NCO's without a combat tour. It was also by invitation, but the recruiting sessions were pretty open ended as to who was invited.

I cannot speak of what the course of action was to get into Delta Force from an existing SOCOM unit.

If you want to go to SFAS today as a civilian, you have to enlist as an 11B (light infantryman), go to Airborne school, and then attend SFAS. The path has been shortened considerably, but check Army.com for the details on the current path to SFAS.

Another lie by recruiters eager to capitalize on the publicity of the Afghan conflict?  Aren't these folks notorious for filling young people's heads with pie in the sky and then not delivering?

When I was in the Navy you could try out for the SEALs in boot camp.  The problem I saw with applying for BUDS in boot camp was you couldn't really run much for almost 6 weeks of boot camp and then your given a narrow window of oppurtunity where you were expected to go do your swim in 12 minutes or something like that and and run 1.5 miles in 8.5 minutes in steel toed boots ie boondockers.  Not a problem if you run 5 days a week, and swim 4-5 days a week regularly, but to do it cold after a 6 week hiatus, doesn't reflect in my oppinion your best efforts or ability for performance.

Running, appears to be the most common point of injuries, it seemed to me talking with people who have failed out of SF trainig.  I wonder if the same type of deal goes for apply for the Green Berets in the Army.  I am sure there are more strings that have to be pulled than meet the eye.

I wonder what the cut off age for the Green Berets is?  In the Navy, the cut off was 28, years old?

xsquid:

New program now, been done on occasion before, when we needed more bodies, with varying degrees of success.

This version drew its first group out of AIT where we picked the top students in each class, recommended by the drills and interviewed them, selecting a few dozen to try out.

As the article states, to get to a detachment will take at least two years, some almost three.  Graduates will arrive on teams as E-5 SGTs.

Road to war will be to recruit future personnel off the street, but must meet a number of special quals (PT score, GT score, DLAB score or language, Eagle Scout/JROTC/CAP experience, etc.).  Recruit must go to Basic, AIT, Airborne, SFAS Prep Course, SFAS, SFQC Prep Course, SFQC, Language, and SERE Schools before arriving on ODA.  18Bs and Cs take 24 months, 18Es and Ds closer to 30 months.  Failures turn into 11B10 Airborne Infantryman replacements here at Ft Bragg.

First group of students just completed SFAS and succeeded at a substantially better rate than their more experienced Army peers.

No longer possible to select and train sufficient SF personnel from an Army of 485,000 when we were filling same 5 AC SFG force (and 2 NG SFGs) by selecting and training from 835,000 man force in 1989.

Ben:

No Ranger requirement, or time in Airborne unit now or in recent history to go SF.

Non-combat arms MOSs have little more "Army" experience that would get them through SFAS or the SFQC.

Casualty rate been pretty low for SF so far.

BYU:

Pretty much correct.  Good info.  You come to try out before?

Trickshot:

What are you asking?

P226:

Few running injuries in SFAS.  Some ruck and obstacle injuries.  Mostly what you would expect for humping a heavy ruck around in the woods by yourself navigating for several days.

Failures run the gamut.  Primary cause for elimination: quitting (voluntary termination).  Many PT test failures within 72 hrs of arrival.  Many PT run and ruck march quitters.  Some obstacle course failures.  Some psych problems, criminal/drug/alcohol issues, some peer failures, some integrity issues, some attention to detail, many land nav failures, even after being trained during selection.  All events are scored, with many just not making enough points.

Cut off age for initial entry soldiers is currently 29.

Hope this helps.

Not really a bad deal for either party if they keep true to the standards.
I mean, you have lots of fit, smart, educated, thinkers between 23-29 who decided to do other things besides join a "line" outfit in the Army (nothing wrong with that though.)
I know a lot of people I think would make great SF guys, but lousy regular Army types. Smart decision on the Army's part IMHO.
