I've already switched to the max charachters but I think they're still a bit tiny... and the rest of the site is still microbic.

No, I'm not shortsighted, I just don't want to become one :(

On the other hand I find the gray background OK.

When I get the chance I will add one more font choice.

I'm also looking at breaking the forums out of the site design to make it quicker to load... dont expect to see though any time soon...

Personally, I can't imagine that the new message fonts are still too small, but maybe there are people with worse eyes than mine. :)  I would like to be able to have the rest of the text larger, but I have no trouble with the message fonts at large.
