I am looking to get a nice piece of meat as a gift for a Ukrainian neighbor. I know that he is very into smoking meat, so I want to get him a cut that will be good for smoking since I know that there is a good chance that he will process it that way. Any recommendations on what would be best (loing, shoulder, etc...)?

Boston butt (pork shoulder). The type of pig matters.  I use Berkshire which tends to have much better marbling.

A nice suckling pig is a good option. Don't forget the apple.

Above post nailed it. Don't just buy cheap pork shoulder cut. Butcher will get you a full Boston cut with good fat

The butt, which is the shoulder, but not the butt, which is a ham.

If you don't need such a large cut, the tenderloins smoke up nicely, too.

Snouts smoke up nice.

Smoked pork liver makes great pate and great chili.

Buy the whole shoulder.  Essentially a Boston Butt and a Picnic Ham still in one piece.

If he is really into smoking he will appreciate that.

A good marbled butt is hard to beat
However a nice lean beef brisket is what does it for me
