Bipartisan gun measure survives test vote

A compromise bill to block suspected terrorists from buying guns overcame a test vote Thursday.

Senators voted 46-52 against tabling the bipartisan proposal spearheaded by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). Tabling the proposal would have cast it aside.

“Let's not miss this opportunity to get something done,” Collins said from the Senate floor ahead of the vote. “This is common sense. It does not threaten to harm the Second Amendment rights of Americans.”

The Senate is now voting on a second GOP proposal on the same issue.

The dueling votes come hours after GOP senators huddled to discuss a path forward.

Lawmakers are under growing pressure to pass gun control legislation after a sit-in on the House floor by Democrats won massive media attention, putting a spotlight on the gridlock in Washington after the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Polls suggest broad support for legislation to keep suspected terrorists from buying guns.

Opponents have argued that many people on terrorism watch lists are put there unfairly, and that the bills would thus infringe on the Second Amendment. The National Rifle Association opposes the bill.
