Taiwan considers different military hardware sources Taiwan could seek to acquire military technologies from Europe if the United States continues to freeze the sale of defence hardware to the country, according to Jack Tang, programme director at Taiwan's Industrial Participation Programme (ICP) Office. Referring to Washington's apparent reluctance to move ahead with the sale of military equipment to Taiwan for fear of destablising improved relations between the country and neighbouring China, Tang told Jane's on 18 August that the impasse could have a significant impact on Taiwan's defence industries.

Spain orders RG-31 protected vehicles General Dynamics Santa Bárbara Sistemas (GDSBS) has been awarded a EUR64.6 million (USD93.9 million) contract to supply 100 RG-31 Mk5E mine-protected vehicles to the Spanish Army. The contract, announced by the company on 3 September, calls for the delivery of 85 armoured personnel carriers, 10 ambulances and five command post variants, plus the integration of remote-controlled weapon station turrets and long-term integrated logistic support

US Navy contracts Pratt & Whitney for JSF components The US Navy (USN) has awarded United Technologies Corporation subsidiary Pratt & Whitney an advance acquisition contract worth approximately USD78 million for long-lead components, parts and materials associated with the Lockheed Martin Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft. The contract, announced on 2 September, is for the lot-three low-rate initial production of eight JSF short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) F135 engines for the USN; 10 conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) engines for the US Air Force (USAF); two CTOL engines for the Royal Netherlands Air Force; and three STOVL engines for the UK Royal Navy (RN)

Romania moves closer to fighter acquisition decision Romanian Defence Minister Teodor Melescanu announced on 2 September that the government would make a decision "in a week or two regarding the acquisition procedure for a new fighter [aircraft]". The announcement followed Melescanu's meeting with his Swedish counterpart, Sven Tolgfors, in Bucharest. Melescanu acknowledged that the Saab Aerospace JAS 39 Gripen "is part of the list" of respondents for the contract, "where [a total of] five competitors meet the operational criteria set by air force specialists"
