Russia to send no more than 10 monitors to U.S. presidential polls

MOSCOW, September 3 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will send no more than 10 monitors to the U.S. elections as part of the OSCE election monitoring mission in November, Russia's top election body said on Wednesday.

Presidential elections in the United States are due to be held on November 4.

"A quota of up to 10 people has been assigned to Russia," said Igor Borisov, a Central Election Commission member.

Borisov said the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe would send a record hundred delegates to monitor the event.

"We have never seen so many OSCE monitors in the U.S.," Borisov said.

The official explained that the organization previously sent no more than 20 monitors to U.S. elections. Russia was unhappy with this as the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the OSCE's main election arm, consistently demands accreditation for a far larger number of observers to monitor elections in Russia.

"The OSCE has considered our arguments," Borisov commented.
