Can someone recommend one or two? Back during the cold war Reader's Digest would occasionally have a story about how screwed up the USSR was because of communism. I enjoyed reading about how messed up their system was. They were so screwed up it was comical.

+1 on The Black Book of Communism
It gives you a detailed history of every Communist regime––-USSR and China of course but also the little ones like Cambodia,Yugoslavia,Cuba etc. |

It does not work because their is always someone who wants power or wants more than others and will do anything anyone to get it. |

Read Tower of Secrets by Victor Sheymov. Sheymov worked for the KGB before he defected to the west. In his book, he makes one comment why communist inevitably fails. It's rather simplistic but goes straight to human nature. In a nutshell, a man will always work harder to provide for his own family before he does that of his neighbor. The Soviets could not stamp out that aspect of human nature.

Socialism takes away that responsibility and therefore is destined to fail. And yet there are those who feel responsible to push it off as a panacea. |

Basic Communism by Clarence Carson.
Thoroughly researched and straightforward book that shows communism isn't so much an economic system as it is a system for concentrating total power in the hands of a few ruling elites. The masses are miserable, but those at the top live the good life. |
