Can someone recommend one or two? Back during the cold war Reader's Digest would occasionally have a story about how screwed up the USSR was because of communism. I enjoyed reading about how messed up their system was. They were so screwed up it was comical.

You mean unlike how screwed up we're getting to be?

Try the Gulag Archipelago Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, We the Living, Ayn Rand.

Good book, heavy reading though, this is one book if the Thought Police ever take hold here in the US that is sure to win you a place in the nearest reeducation camp.

this is one of the only books that I have read, including stuff while in college, that I have to have no distractions, no tv, no wife talking etc. But on the same line it is one of the most educational reads I have ever read.

Communism does look good on paper, let me save you some time
It does not work because their is always someone who wants power or wants more than others and will do anything anyone to get it.

Yep Animal Farm makes it very clear from the inception to the demise.

Anthem is also very good and if you are an average reader will only take about 2 hours to read.

And it does not work because it depends on everyone pulling their own weight for the common goal/good. In any society there are too many willing to lay down and let some one else carry the load.

Read Tower of Secrets by Victor Sheymov.  Sheymov worked for the KGB before he defected to the west.  In his book, he makes one comment why communist inevitably fails.  It's rather simplistic but goes straight to human nature.  In a nutshell, a man will always work harder to provide for his own family before he does that of his neighbor.  The Soviets could not stamp out that aspect of human nature.

A History of Economic Thought and Method by Robert Ekelund.

Starvation of one's self and of one's family is a great impetus to get off one's backside and work. Socialism takes away that responsibility and therefore is destined to fail. And yet there are those who feel responsible to push it off as a panacea.

Basic Communism by Clarence Carson.

Thoroughly researched and straightforward book that shows communism isn't so much an economic system as it is a system for concentrating total power in the hands of a few ruling elites.

The masses are miserable, but those at the top live the good life.
