About a year ago, I asked my 7 year old daughter, who loves art, if she wanted to paint a guitar for me.  She jumped at the chance, so I acquired a telecaster body already painted in Arctic white and sanded the clear coat off.

I gave her a huge set of Posca paint markers and let her do her thing.  When it was finished, I put several clear coats of acrylic lacquer on it and assembled the parts I had ordered for it.  Because she painted inside the control cavity, I had a custom cut clear cover made for it so the electronics and her painting are visible.  Here are pics of the finished product (specs are below the pics):

Body:  Warmoth telecaster in arctic white, rear routed
Neck:  Fender MIM telecaster maple neck with maple board and Fender locking tuners
Pickups:  TV Jones Brian Setzer signature filtertrons
Bridge:  Babicz Full Contact Vintage Series 3-hole mount
Neckplate: Glendale "Extreme" Fat
Potentiometers: Bourns 500 kOhm audio pots
Capacitor:  .022 orange drop
Switch:  CRL 3-way
Knobs:  Q-parts chrome red

She's not a hippie girl, but tends to paint like one.  Anyway, I thought you music guys would like to see our custom creation.  It sounds great, and my daughter gets a kick out of seeing me play it (I'm a complete hack, though).

Totally awesome.

Had it been my 7 year old, the motif would have been planes, cars, fire, guns and dinosaurs (fighting or pooping or both concurrently).

Come to think of it - that too could look great on a guitar!

Ha.  My original plan was to have both of my kids, including my 10 year old son, work on it either mixed or half and half.  My son lost interest in it which is probably just as well, as the two kids have no interests in common.  My son's art would have been more like you describe.  If you've ever seen those guitars that are done up like the outside of a WWII plane, that's what I imagine my son would create.  Which would be awesome, too, but I doubt he wants to do it and I don't really want another long guitar project.

Yes.  Yes I am.

Thanks for all the kind words, fellas!  So much of our children's art ends up in the trash over time, but this is one way to preserve some of it.

I don't think I've ever seen a guitar that made me feel a little weepy like this one did.  Your daughter is a real artist, and that is a guitar is a real treasure.  I'd play the heck out of it onstage, and tell everyone what it is.  It looks a little like something Steve Vai would like.  You should figure out a way to send him pictures, I bet he would respond.

Oh, believe me, it has a clear coat on it.  If anything it has too much!  I'm more worried about gradual yellowing than anything damaging the paint.

Thanks so much for the compliments, guys.  It means a lot.  My daughter spent a lot of time working on it, over school breaks and such.  She really takes her time and is very detail oriented.

ETA:  I should also say that purple is her favorite color, hence the strap.

If you do something like we did, I can highly recommend the Posca paint markers.  They go on smoothly and have brilliant colors.  There's no erasing though.  My daughter roughly sketched in pencil before applying the paint markers.

You know, the way that she did the colors in the hand? That tells me that she may have a knack for doing multicolored dye jobs on figured wood using the dye and sand technique.
