My dream plane, a modern rebuild of a P-38 Lightning. Just wondering, who builds these things nowadays? I've seen modernized ones in magazines, is there a manufacturer that sells them as a regular item?

Just pricing, I'm not rich yet

The only repro warbirds I have seen are 2/3 scales repros, a few mustangs done like that. Those are pretty cool.

For the real thing, you are talking millions.

2/3 p51 (S-51) In flight.

The Stewart S-51D is an all aluminum replica of the North American P51-D Mustang at approximately 70% scale. The aircraft was designed by Jim Stewart over a period of about 20 years, and was offered as a kit in the late 1990s. It is normally powered by a big block Chevy V-8 engine in the range 454-573 cubic inch displacement. These engines normally make between 400-600 hp at 4750 rpm.

Chevy 454 in the air ain't nothin to sneeze at.

Sweet Video of the S-51

Check out http://ezellaviation.com/. They just finished a five year total restoration of Lefty Gardner's "White Lightning" for the new owner Red Bull.
Rumors are that it was in the $8,000,000 plus range.

Sorry, the Chevy v-8 while powerful just doesn't have the sound of the old Rolls Royce Merlin..........not even a comparison.

I saw a 2/3-ish  P-38 about three or four years ago on TV, an older gentleman put one together, but I can't remember much more about it.
In the mid to late 80's, somebody also put together 1/2 scale Stuka's. Flying or Popular Science had an article about those as well.

There was an 80% P-38 project, but it is gone, and, last but not least, a 67% A-10 Warthog project. Can't track either one of those, they are kaput.

Perhaps my P-38 Repro was a misstatement. Doesn't have to be an exact replica. I've seen more modern private aircraft that were just build as a P-38 "Style" in magazines. I'd be perfectly happy with those too

There was one mentioned in EAA Sport Aviation a number of months back; the gentleman who built it did a great job and it really looked for all the world like a real P-38, but he did not want to sell the plans (let alone produce a kit) because of the liability.   In our society, I guess I can't blame him.

They had one of the S51's crash into a RV park here in Ocala, FL a couple of months ago.  the pilot was the only one who died.

I've been wanting to buy one of these Titan T-51 Kits for some time now.

Last time I checked, there were some good aerobatic videos of one with a Mini-Merlin on Youtube.
