A friend of mine just bought a share in a Champ for 12k. He's going to build some hours then sell his share. I think it burns 3gph so he'll do ok on the deal I think.

It's looking better all the time - if you're an AOPA member, they have a service that will link you with other people that want to form co-ownerships. |

I think the perfect situation is a share between 6ish in an IFR aircraft. Share the fixed costs, pay a little per hour toward maintenance and fuel up. Any way you look at it thought, its expensive. I am looking at joining CAP to get a few free flight hours from time to time. |

Have I mentioned the Bonanza XTRA with tip tanks and garmin 500 for 100 per hour wet, that used to be reimbursed at 2.50 per gallon but is now reimbursed at 4.00 per gallon?

it seems cheaper to buy an old cessna and make some payments for a few months and just pay for gas and insurance if you want to get a private. This is exactly what I did. Bought a '77 and made minimum payments on it. Then, sold it for $3k more than I gave for it
I got lucky with the sale, but if your serious and don't drag your feet, it really is a decent idea. And I am anti-debt. |

Used to rent 150s for 35.00 p/h wet. Add another 15 bucks and you got a CFI to ride with you.

A c172 is the same no matter the year. New tech is shiny, but its of limited value in day VFR flying for fun. |

Add not having much time to fly to that and it isn't worth it. For a primary student, buying a 150/152 is a great idea if you get one that is well maintained and in good shape. Now I own a share of a 172 and we fly it for $45 dry. The monthly fee is $90.00 which includes 1 hour of flying. I don't worry about the fixed cost or maintenance anymore. Also check the bulletin boards at nearby airports and the classified section of local aviation newsletters. That is how we advertised when a couple shareholders left. |

I remember twin time was only $125, thats pretty painful on the 172. |

Thats what I remember in the early 90s. Same here, 1984. A 152 was $30 wet. 172 was $35. I made friends with the owner, so he would trade me washing them for an hour or so on the Hobbs. He laughed after I finished washing the 172 once, told me to take it up and dry it off.

10 years ago, a 152 was $37/hr, a 172 50/hr, 182 went for 65/hr and a C-model Aztec was $125/hr, all prices were wet.
Them days, like 99-cent gas are LLOONNGG gone!
