I have this fireplace:

I hate it. It is painted white... and takes up the whole wall. I use it quite a lot in the winter.

I am wondering - is all of this non-sctructural? It looks like the brick is just applied to the interior wall.... can I just knock it all down?

What I really want to do - it trim the sides down to about 21" on either side of the opening, and take the height down to about 5 feet. Install a mantle, and then have this product sprayed on: www.decopierre.com/en/galerie.php to make a natural stone look.

Can I cut this and knock it off?

Can I square up the fireplace opening? The Deco spray limestone can be applied to any surface.... so I could take down all the brick and start over if it was doable and warranted it.

I would say that you could take it down to the point that you want it, but it might be easier just to sheet over it.

Make sure the brick does not continue above the ceiling or above the roof. In other words make sure its NOT structural before you do anything. Make sure its not holding up the rest of the chimney. Make sure the ceiling is not bearing on it. Etc. Etc....

If it is just a veneer of brick you can do what ever you want to it.

+1 The wall of brick is probably mostly non-structural but in there somewhere is a masonry chimney so check above the ceiling and if no brick work your way in from the edges until you get to the chimney. I don't blame you for replacing the tile.

After you have learned to tile it will be the same cost and look better having real stone on the fireplace surround.

Next questions: The hearth: Is that just a wooden box that they brick over? Can I just cut that with the method used above, and remove the rest of each side?

I am thinking, since I will be spraying the whole thing of the spray on limestone product... I could just demo the entire hearth, and build a new box in the size and shape I like, no?

Pictures would be good.
The hearth in your case is cprobably oncrete block with brick over and yes just tear it out. IF drywall goes over the top then it probably isn't structural. If you need a c;ean cut then rent a 14" cutoff saw with diamond blade. the skil saw won't do all the way through. Otherwise just use a sledgehammer from the outside in with a skilsaw and mortar up the boo boo before limonite.
