I have A MTD mower with a Honda 6 h.p. on it.
It stopped running. Pulled the carb, cleaned it up, jet is clear, new plug.
It has needed starter fluid to get going for a few years but once its been run it runs.
Pull cord long gone, been using a socket on a Dewalt.
It will sort of sputter but not go. Any ideas?

Fuel - go buy some fresh gasoline.  Don't try to use last year's fuel.  Drain the old fuel in the carb, fuel line and tank.

Air - clean the air filter or replace it.

Spark -  pull the plug and make sure you're getting a strong spark.

Ahem,... you did set the choke before trying to start it, right?

Fresh gas 91 octane, air filter is fine, choked not choked, good spark I don't know.
It will sputter, kind of like a backfire but not run

Did you hit something with it?  Sounds like it could be a partially sheared flywheel key.

I don't know, it turns snorts and pops, if it is seared what would it do?

Exactly what you are describing.  Basically, the spark timing is off if the flywheel key is sheared...or partially sheared.

Ok, what about a stuck valve or they need adjusting

Intake valve was stuck. Got it running and grass cut. It will not REV very high like it used to and sort of surges but thats for another day.

Well valve problems will also cause a similar issue.  I ASSumed that it had proper compression.  That's what I get for assuming!

Sounds like it's about time for a new mower!!
