HBO had a "making of the intro" special where they documented all the special effects and models and stuff that went into that.

The "O" lights that go around and around were actually mounted on a mechanical device with fiber optic wires to it, and then they used filming tricks to get it to blur into the streaks.

Now, they just use a computer for that stuff.

I was 8 years old then staying up late to watch HBO on my little 13" black and white tv while my parents thought I was sleeping. Porkys at night and Fragle Rock in the morning FTW!

I was looking at some production photos of Alien the other day. They built some massive detailed sets that took dozens of artists to conceive, build, and detail. They just don't do shit like that anymore. I think CGI has made some film makers lazy and hasn't always resulted in a better end product.

Yeah, I remember that intro meant something good was coming on. Do you guys remember that early cable would not show R-rated movies before 7pm? That intro meant blood, violence, and nudity. They also used to have that 3 minute long warning on the screen that the movie was NOT edited and was for mature audiences, children should leave the room, etc. You knew it was gonna be sweet!

It had a decent (!) openings (wrong phrase?) too.

They played this about 4 years ago at an in the park movie event in NYC in Bryant Park. There was around 2,000 people there. Everyone loved it and started singing along. Da-da-daaa-da-da-d-d-da-da! Kind of cool!

I remember the first video I watched on Mtv and it was brand new , Twisted Sister - Were Not Gonna Take It. Actually 1984 was the first time I ever watched cable period
