When the operative goes into the field in search of Bourne, why does he drop his Sig rifle in favor of a pistol?  I've never understood why he would do that.  Seems to me the rifle is always preferable to a pistol, especially out in an open field where ranges of engagement could easily be in the hundreds of yards.

True.  But even without irons it would serve better than the pistol.   I'm sure you all know this, but just emphasizing the obvious.
