I watched it on DVD the other night and it was staggeringly uncompelling. Johhny Cash was one-of-a-kind -- an icon and a legend -- yet this film was little more than a retelling of the same tired old story with nothing -- except for Joaquin Phoenix's eerily on-target vocals -- even slightly hinting at the complexity and talent of the real Cash. Reese Witherspoon couldn't have been more irritating if she'd tried.
If you're going to even
start a project like this, knowing you'll have to make compromises, omissions and end up with less than the whole, if not
real story, why even bother, except to make a quick buck? Some fine musicianship on display but, seriously -- this could have been about
anybody in the music business at the time. Johnny's
"Hurt" video, made shortly before June's death (and his own, of course) said more in three minutes than this film did in two hours. I dare you to watch it without getting choked up.
