If you are looking to rip them in 1080p format then the MKV. format has worked well for me. An average rip in 1080p is around 20 GBs so you need a large memory stick but 128 GBs sticks are cheap now. This is the software I use, check it out.

It wants to open in windows movie maker and I have no idea how to proceed. I even tried the online help and it pretty much didn't go into anything further than where I am. |

MakeMKV to rip the files, then Handbrake to re-encode or downsample. I play them on a Western Digital box connected to the TV, but there are a dozen ways to play them as long as you have the right codecs available.
