Just wondered if anyone has swapped a straight axle under a GM IFS truck... I have a 92 GMC suburban and a 97 Chevy suburban and would like to turn one of them into a big ass mud truck(both are 1/2ton, 4x4, 350ci, stockers with over 200,000mi each)... I have several 3/4 and 1ton 4x4 drivetrains sitting around so I should be able to piece one together.. I have several dana 44's, a dana 60, and 14bolt FF rears. Or I can go bigger as I have a complete set of 2 1/2ton rockwells sitting out back...

This will be a mud/trail toy only.. I will keep either motor mostly stock and just use steep gears. Goal is to clear 44-48in tires... I have a general idea on how it would all go together but I have never built one myself... If anyone has pics or info that would help.....

What transfer case do you have? I assume a driver's side NP241, so either you need to go with a Ford D44 or D60 from a 77-79 4x4 or a 91-99(?) D60 from an F350 to match up your t-case; otherwise you'll need to swap out the NP241 (Driver's) for a NP241 (Passenger's) out of a 88-91 Suburban V1500/V2500 or Blazer/Jimmy (K5) to use Chevy solid axles, as they have passenger side differentials.

You can use the NP205/203/208 also, but they don't have VSS speed sensors, so you'd loose speedometer––This is the reason you need a 88-91 NP241, as it is both passenger-drop and has the VSS speed sensor.
