The first one in my Suburban went out. It has almost 150k miles on it, so I wasn't that sad. Now the one on my Jimmy died. The one for the suburban is at Bowtie Overdrives right now, I just wasn't looking forward to paying another grand for a tranny.

Like I said, I don't mind the one in the suburban, but the one in the Jimmy hurts. The previous owner said it was rebuilt about 2 years and 40k miles ago.

700R4s are netorious for going out in the bigger rigs due to heat issues. I would sugest that you get the biggest meanest tranny cooler you can and intall it. I had a 84 K5 with a 700r4 and after installing a tranny cooler intended for a 1ton pickup it ran realy cool even when 4wheeling and towing. Also if you going under 65 mph, keep it in third gear, not drive. This will disengage the OD bands and reduce heat and wear. Good luck with the new one!

The first few years for the 700s were hard due to weak parts, later years were beefed up..

Excellent advice. If you don't already have one, get a good aftermarket trans cooler. It will help extend the life of your automatic transmission. |

I already have the biggest B&M Super Coolers on both trucks. I guess it was just old age.

huh i would have thought you could stretch it a bit further. But hey 150K on a 700r4 is doing well realy.

I've got over 205k on my truck. I do see some trouble ahead tho. It takes a bit longer to engage into gear when shifting from say reverse to drive. Thats it so far.
