Probably the Ninja 250. It gets about 70 mpg and is generally considered to be bulletproof.

My son has a 1994 Ninja 250 and it is identical, except for color, to the 2005 model.
I'm not sure how much older you can go with the same bike but I think back to about 1992. They are very good bikes and the power will suprise you if you keep the rpm up. Redline is 14,000. Check out www.ninja250.org |

I don't think there have been any significant changes in the looks of the bike since it was introduced. But I don't know that much about their history.

Get the 500 instead, 250 is way under powered.

+1 on the EX500. They are pretty competent bikes and there are a lot to choose from since they have made them since God was a boy. A Katana is a better bike, but you'll get less 'respect' on it.

I've got a '99 CBR600F4 and I get between 45 and 60 MPG depending on how I ride it. That bike is fast as hell for a little 600. It's all I need and then some. It's been super reliable, when I don't wreck it, and only needs the typical preventative maintenance. The transmission is nice and smooth too. Better than most of the Suzukis I've tried. MJD

Not 100% sure on what you're looking for (or why), but if I were you, i'd look at the Suzuki SV650.

Depends on what kind of riding you're doing. I wouldn't want to take one onto the interstate, but it should have more than enough power for anything else. I'm assuming it'll be a commuter bike with the gas mileage requirement. Should make an excellent commuter. |

One of these:
  I started on an EX250 and moved to an EX500, Buell S2, and ZX7R. The 250 got insane mileage, but could barely make it to 80 MPH. The 500 got about 40 mpg, but didn't have any stock parts left. The 750 was somewhere around 30, which is understandable since I test rode it at the track and put just enough stuff on it to make it almost street legal  The Buell, however, has plenty of power and gets over 50 mpg. Buell has gotten a bad reputation, but the S2 is before Harley got their paws on the operation. I've had zero problems except an oil tank bolt that backs out about 2 turns in 3000 miles. But you can get a 250, 500, and 750 (one each) for the price of an S2  If I was to start over I'd start with a 94+ EX500, but I won't trade the Buell for anything

Hehe, at first I thought you meant the air cleaner. S2s lean way to the left on the sidestand (which is about 15 feet long) so you can't just sit the helmet on the seat. |

my Honda Magna gets about 35mpg if im easy on it... mostly it gets about 25-30mpg the way i ride... but man its a fun bike to ride
try one of the honda interceptors its the same engine as my bike but sport bike, screw gas mileage go for power  once you go V4 you wont go back

I owned a 98 VFR for 5 years. It's criminal what Honda did in the remodel in 2002. Added 50 pounds, a completely unnecessary VTEC system (valve adjustments now run 500-600 dollars every 16000 miles), and the horsepower gain for all this was... zero. Strange, huh? |

EX 500 (or Ninja 500 after 1994).
With my 185lbs and mostly town driving, I get about 50mpg. If I'm really good and actually go the speed limit, I can get it up around 55mpg. WIZZO |

any 600cc works i'd lean more towards honda's. the older yamahahas are sparse when it comes to factory or aftermarket items. not putting down the yami's but working for a multi line dealer i see less availability for them then other brands.
plus you're under 900cc's so ins will not be that expensive (depending) on age, lic history etc. |

My wife has a 2003 VFR (looks just like the pic except she has the trunk also) and I can't wait to do the valve clearance check.  I did the one on my ST1300 and it was pretty straight forward, couple hours total. |

The Suzuki Hayabusa is supposed to be a really good bike for novices just beginning to ride, and gets excellent gas mileage as well.
Kawasaki's new ZX-14 Ninja is supposed to be a great beginner bike as well. I'd recommend either as a starter bike. |

Thanks i'm not looking for a starter bike, got a starter street bike in 1997. the Busa don't get good gas milage, neither does the ZX 14m have fun t boning a car asshat.

ninja 250 has been in production since 1987. No major changes, and I don't even know of any minor ones. Its super reliable, and is very proven.
Ninja 500 changed in 94 in the way of bodywork, 17" rims, etc. I've got almost 21K miles on my '01 ninja 500. Its a champ! |

Well since you already ride (which I thought you were new
)...Hondas CBR600F4i probably would be the best for ya. mid 40-50mpg, decent looks and has hondas well known reliability. If mpg is more important, then the Buell XB9S. LAst I hear 65mpg is norm with them. They arent as reliable as hondas per se, but unlike Honda (and teh other japanese makes), the dealers will come get you if you have a problem on teh roads and HD shops dont usually fight you with warrantying a bike bought somewheres else. |
