What is the origin of the flame paint job?   Why?  Does it signify heat built up from friction from going so fast?  

What do you think of when you see a flame paint job?

This is not my car, only here as an example.

This isn't the most authoritative, but it offers a good insight into the history of flames and custom paint and the players in the early days.  There are some good books out there on the guys that started it all.

Thats also known as "real flame".  A buddy of mine had his Titan front fenders done up in that.  It was a mix of blue and white on a grey truck.  He had skulls formed within the flames also.  
It looks cool.  But he traded the truck in for an Xterra.
