So who has bought themselves a locking gas cap?

I sometimes leave my car in a Commuter park and ride(I carpool) and worry that our vehicles fuel may be siphoned out.

Paranoid?

I also park my truck under an operational street light, punks hate well lit areas...

You're not paranoid. Some cars(like the Ford Festiva my dad had) had a little lock on the door to the fuel tank that only the car key could open. Suckers!

i also just bought myself a locking gas cap online. should be here in a few days. id be so pissed if someone siphoned out all 28 gallons of gas in my tank.

A lot of newer cars come with anti siphon devices built into the filler tubes.

28 Gallons! Damn and here I am pissed off that I have to fill my 16 Gallon tank in my Xterra almost every other day...

In my neighborhood I've used locking gas caps for the last 30 years.

My truck holds 27 gallons.

I went for a bike ride today in search of a locking gas cap. Neither auto parts store I went to (Advance, and Pep Boys) had any, Advance sold out this morning. Both said long backorder. Pep Boys girl said none of the stores have any. not sure if she meant pep boys in the buffalo area or all pep boys nationally.

Puch a hole in the bottom of the gas tank, by-by gas.....if a person wants it bad enough, there is allways a way.

False sense of security. Thieves are punching holes in gas tanks. Easier than siphoning, even without a locking gas cap! Save your dough for gas.

+1, my truck holds 44 gallons. Locking gas caps are more to prevent unwanted items from getting in my gas than stealing gas. I got dual tanks, dual stants, keyed alike for $8. This isn't a last week price, for sure.

So, you have a bug out bag and no locking gas cap?

If you drive off road in the rocks, you need this part. Our skid fully protects the fuel tank from damage from rocks and other trail debris. Formed from a single piece of 3/16" steel plate, it absorbs impacts while retaining it's shape. Drain holes along the side keep it from holding mud and water and make it easy to keep clean. The skidplate is finished in zinc gold plating and is entirely bolt-on using factory hardware.

Actually, it is a device that is made into the filler tube where it enters into the gas tank. It is kind of like the plate that is at the top of the filler neck where you put the gas nozzle into it.

I'm not sure what the percentage of cars that have these devices, but I know a lot of them do.

My car and my bike both came with factory locking gas caps (in the case of the car, you need to flip the door to the filler head open from the driver's seat).

a locking gas cap would be easy to defeat, jam a big ass screwdriver in the key slot and twist, they'll destroy the cap and get your gas, maybe destroy the pipe from the gas cap to the tank

I will give you guys a heads up on some of the aftermarket and cheap locking gas caps. Some will make your Check Engine light to come on, the cap pressureizes the tank. Like the cap does on a radiator. But it is only on the newest of cars, with a pressure senor on the sending unit.

I had a 93 escort GT that was like this. We were trying to siphon out gas before pulling the sending unit out (full tank of gas) and we werent successful.

Then again, if someone wants it bad enough, they'll get it. Gas tanks arent made of thick metal, alot of them now are made of plastic...

I thought they would help prevent gas theft but as for the one's on full size chevy's I had a customer friday come in saying how his tank(2003 tahoe) was emptied the night before.

I must have sold 20+ locking gas caps.

alot of them now are made of plastic...

.

Everything for 1999 and up GM is plastic now it seems. Even toyotas and Nissan are plastic. But if someones wants it they'll tap the tank or break the filler neck just to get the gas.

I hate the fucking things, I had one of those a long time ago till I had one freeze on me.
I got stuck fumbling with a stuck cap at a gas station for 30 minutes while it was sleeting out. Fuck it not worth it

Carry lock de-icer...or do what I did(and had nearly everyone running away from me!

), use a lighter to thaw the gascap!

I did forget to mention it was a old car and it had a external cap. the lock itself wasn't stuck, the whole damn cap had a layer of ice on it that was thick.
