Here is the lowdown. Both are 2012s. The 3 is a hatchback auto with 14000 miles. The 6 is an auto witn 32.5k miles. Both are the I touring trim. I figure with the current asking prices for both (the 3 is 15,994 and the 6 is 15,929) I could get an out the door price of 14,300 for the 6 and 14,500 for the 3 with trading my 2002 protege.

I am having a hard time choosing. What say ye? Any words of advice?

3, lower miles and you get the benefit of the skyactiv engine (mpg).  And its an hatch.

Another vote for the 3. Unless you dislike hatches of course

Looked at the carfax on the 6 and it looks like it is an ex rental, and it was stolen and recovered at one point. Not sure if that was just a late rental return or what, but that doesn't bode well.

So is my asking OTD price on the 3 sound good? Not sure if it's a smoking deal or not, but seems good. Also, I would go new, but with the price reduction on the 2012, we are now looking at a nearly $3k different in price between new and the 1013.

And for the record, I love hatchbacks :)

Ask for 14k OTD and be willing to go up to $14300 but not without taking up some of their time first.

How much is a brand new Mazda 3? I thought that they started out at $15k? You wouldn't notice the payment difference between the used and a new one, if that were the case.

You should be able to get a new 2014 3 for essentially the same price. The 2014 new body style is about to hit the lots, so there should be some deals on the '13s. I know around here you can get a brand new Focus for under 15...

Another vote for new.  You ought to be able to get a brand new 2013 Mazda3 for within spitting distance of that price.  Look at THIS: new Mazda3's under $16k, within 500 mi of Seattle

Are you dead set on a Mazda?

+1 on the Mazda3; lower miles, more space and Skyactive. Tough to be honest, I have only driven the Mazda6.

Not dead set, but I currently own one and have a lot of faith in them.

To be fair,, the particular 2013. New model I have my eye on is a mid level I touring, so,it's no exactly going to be within spitting distance on the price. I am looking at $2500 - $3000 difference between the 2012 and 2013, unless I get extremely lucky and getting a banging deal on the new one.

I just got a 2013 3 iTouring HB.  I really enjoy it and haven't had any complaints, from what I understand the 2012 and 2013 are pretty much the same.  The skyactive engine gets great milage.

I do like the HB, but I am not 100% sure that I can live the automatic tranny.

Here is a pic of the 2012
