What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?

Proteins are biology's workhorses  its "nanomachines." Before
proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble
themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical
and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a
mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"),
there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases,
such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's
disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software.

Folding@home is a distributed computing project  people from
throughout the world download and run software to band together to make
one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the
project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational
methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions
of times more challenging than previously achieved. "

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Install Guide:

  1. Download client, click here. And then install it.[/li]
  2. Enter in team: 40965
  3. Enter your arfcom nick name.
  4. Program will finish install.
  5. On your desktop the program is called FAHControl. Run this.
  6. It will download a "work unit" and the start processing it, you will notice your PC fans kick on.
  7. It's all automatic from here, just let it run as long as you can.
  8. If you need to pause there is a control button on the taskbar, looks like multicolored blobs. Right click to show controls.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some things to know:

This will make use of 100% of your processor and/or GPU. You may experience a higher electrical bill, and wear and tear on your PC due to heat, so make sure your fans are clean and working. To run my GTX 1060 it costs in electricity $0.25 a day at $0.10 a kilowatt hour rates

How many PPD (points per day) can I expect from my PC with what GPU? est. (you can also double or triple these numbers with SLI or Crossfire)(some older ATI cards show low numbers, they were not optimized for folding and use more power)

Can't believe it's been almost exactly 1 year since last running FAH. Time flies - and cancer sucks.

Going to take a while to get back into it, but 87 must be held!

Funny. I think my current desktop has more power than the racks of servers I ran the client on in 2001.

Looks like 3 hours to complete a work unit

Used to fold for an overclocking forum years ago.  Stumbled across this thread.  Added 1M or so points in the last week or two for the arf team.

I took my old machines and re-purposed them into the basement where they sit and fold 24/7.  Well, unless MS does a Win10 update, which seems to be weekly, which means I have to constantly check the machines, etc., etc.

Folding@home focuses on protein folding whereas BOINC is simply an open framework that any researcher can utilize, so there is a variety of projects to contribute to.

I have been experimenting with boinc. And while some of the projects are neat, the folding@home seems to be very worthwhile contributing to. I am going to run Folding@home and help contribute some to the arfcom team.

And I assume all I need to do is enter the team ID during setup and I will be contributing to the arfcom team?

FWIW - I only fold with my GPUs. The heat stress on the CPU versus the points per day just don't justify using the CPU - YMMV.

Agreed. Just trying to throw some points on the board right now. It is interesting comparing the two machines I have crunching numbers. Both started roughly same time.

Computer 1:
AMD 3700X @ 4.2ghz
Nvidia RTX-2070 Super

Computer 2:
Dell Poweredge R720
2X Intel E5-2690 @ 2.9ghz

You will be heating your house with those this winter.

I would think the RTX would be putting out much better numbers, but you may have to get some WUs completed so you get into bonus points.

Woah. My temps were nuts on my desktop. Hovering around 87-90 degrees.  95 is thermal shutoff I think. CPU is overclocked from 3.6 to 4.2 Ghz though/.  Dropped it down to 4.1ghz and getting about 75-78 degrees now.  Gpu has about A 13% overclock and hovering at 52 degrees.-

You can use MSI Afterburner and set the parameters for your GPU, to include temps. I'm running three systems with four GPUs, all at 65C, and getting about 2.5MPPDs.

You can also get programs that will control your CPU fans, but for the 50K PPDs a day, it 's better to just use a GPU at 600-700K PPDs.

Just some random info.

2 months ago I started again after a 2 or 3 year absence. I was near the middle of the list on the team, I used to use an old laptop from  back then just CPU mining. I returned 2 months ago and was around position 30, now I'm In the top ten of the team. I am only using a single GTX 1060.

So I'm just saying, you too can be in the top ten with minimal effort now with modern tech.

Fwiw,

you're 11th. at your current production you need 3.9 days of folding to take the #10 spot from mugzilla. It will happen on or about 12.17.19 @ 6am

CavScout is gaining 405,014 a day on you and will catch you in 3.6 weeks (01.07.20, 11am)

Not sure, seems like it would depend on the GPU. riser can probably keep up with low to mid range card. if the bus interface is fast enough to feed the gpu work units, it wouldn't matter.
