Which wireless standard to choose?

Should I go with wireless g (maybe with speesbooster?) or is wireless n ready for mainstream usage?

Last I heard it's still in draft form and kinda iffy?

What does everyone else here use?

I want to hookup 1 wired comp and 1 wireless comp.

I actually reccomend 802.11a, far less interference as it uses different frequencies than b/g/n. Equipment generally has a shorter range however and you may need to access points to completely cover a large house.

What is the distance? I have less than 50ft to go. But have 2 walls to go through.

Would a cut it?

I believe the N routers are backwards capatable with the other standards

N will be more future-proof. G is cheaper and more widely supported. Anything like speedboost or MIMO or whatever is likely to only work with that manufacturer's gear; this is OK if you're buying everything all at once.

Unless it's a laptop, run cable.

I've done wireless and upgraded and changed and fixed. It's still not as good or secure as jsut running a wire.

Can't. I rent. Landlord won't let me run cable. Plus, I want to add wireless cameras someday.

I'll go out on a limb and assume you mean wireless security cameras. be aware that most of them don't use 802.11 anything; they use non-standard protocols.

Run it around the baseboards.

Get creative.

I have never owned a house....yet.

If you are set on wireless, the biggest thing i can stress is security. Make sure you secure that thing. The last thing you need is some wardriver downloading kiddie porn from your AP.

Security is one thing I'm prepared for. I'm going to do all I can to secure my network.

One more thing, shoud I use a PCI NIC card or USB NIC?

If I use PCI, won't the card antenna be to low to the ground or is there no difference?

If I use USB, I can put the device on top of my desk and maybe has less interference?

I would not suggest any N series equipment just yet. The RFC hasn't been finalized and things could change for the protocol. Granted you could get lucky and a firmware upgrade would solve any issues, but then again....

Most of the PCI cards have a "rubber ducky" type antenna that attaches via an L-shaped connector. There are lots of cables that allow you to put this antenna anywhere you want.

You should really wander to your nearest superstore and look at the selection. I think you're overthinking the process; wireless setup has gotten much easier over the last few years.

i disagree i WOULD buy the N equipment. i just bought a wpc300n (for my laptop) i am getting full speed downloads in areas i couldn't before with my B card(less than 50% signal). this is while using a wrt54g v1 router. i could only imagine what the N routers could do

if you register the card online they will email you when the firmware releases are available.
