The title pretty much says it all. The only thing I will really be doing with it is cropping photos, and shrinking the file size down to some thing reasonable for my digicam pics.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I just tried Paint.net , which is free and fairly powerful.  It's no Photoshop, but it does a heck of a lot more than the standard Paint program does.

if you get tired of trying to learn the gimp, try out Irfan -> http://www.irfanview.com/

the guy who wrote it responds to e-mails, Irfan is a pretty cool guy.

it's much smaller than gimp.
