What the hell is "ntldr" and why is it tormenting me? I had a dual boot setup (xppro and mce) and I wanted to use MCE only.....I KNOW I'm an idiot and screwed up by just disconnecting the drive xp was on, but now, if I have ANY other hdd plugged into my computer, including via usb, I get "ntldr is missing" prior to Windows loading...if I unplug everything, it's fine....

1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.
2 .Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.
3. Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file.
4 .Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file.
5. Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32.
6. New hard disk drive being added.
7.Corrupt boot sector / master boot record.
8. Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
9. Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable.

its basically a generic message saying it can't find a boot device. you might have to change the HD boot priority in the bios, for it to boot off a different HD.

windows NT LoaDeR.

It is the program that loads (or starts the loading) the operation system itself.

In the bios, is the order of which storage device to start from set correctly?

Your system might be trying to startup using the wrong drive.

<sigh> I figured that was it....I think the best thing I can do with some of my "problems" is set up Remote Assistance and pour beer into you guys while you figure out exactly what I did...

I also have an ongoing glitch with my SATA conections....

If you can, back up the boot.ini file, and then edit the original to remove any references to the XP install. You might need to change the location of the MCE install in the boot.ini too.

That's what seems to have started this whole mess....It just happened again this am...machine was fine last night....then got hung up when I hit the "shutdown" selection...now this morning, "ntldr" is missing.....ARGH!

Booting from CD into Recovery Console..."fixmbr" command didn't do any good.

Hmmm...whatever happened to the "since Windows failed to load......(select "Last Known Good Configuration"? Does MCE lack this feature?

..And what about Automated System Recovery? Ho'ws this work?

One thing for sure: thank god I have a laptop that I don't svrew arund with or I wouldn't be here now....

ETA: Found th eproblem...you ain't gonna believe this: I left my camera's CF disk plugged into the usb port on the monitor..didn't notice it until I was looking at the boot choices. Pulled it out, rebooted and all is well (as well as normal)_

i disable usb as a boot device anytime i build a system. as you can tell its kinda problematic

you can always reenable it later, at least you got it working

Yeah, I'll have to check the BIOS for this..As it is, I finally solved the question of the "Mystrey FloppY" (since I have no fdd installed) by finding "legacy diskette--> disable" in a dark, remote BIOS corner....<laugh>

I keep USB boot enabled only because I have a bootable usb hard drive incase the SHTF =)
