The generic answer is that the connection wasn't working between your browser and the server hosting the pic. There are many possibilities and to get specific, it would depend upon which pic you're attempting to look at.

If you are using Internet Exploder try right clicking on the red x and select show picture. If it still doesn't show a link is probably broken.

check you encoding under the View button in MSIE, for some reason this site switches mine over Western European (ISO) from Western European (Windows) when that happens I lose the pics. Switching it back returns the pics. That's my experience only, on three machines from two conx.
