windows is a packrack, it saves links and "stuff"(don't want to debate the extent)

before it does anything it has to check with its complete list to make sure it doesn't already have it

sooooo.........if you can delete some of the history files or caches it MIGHT speed it up

computers are horror stories. i have to support all my extended familys' PCs. Based on what you have said, sounds like you have some viruses or something gobbling up your system. Do control-alt-delete, give up task manager, make sure you check the box that says list all processes and see what is running and how busy your cpu is and what is at the top of the busy list (sort it in cpu busy order).

also.. what OS, what cpu, what size disk.. how much memory...

how about the task bar, what kind of "free resources" do you have?
Link Posted: 8/1/2005 5:37:11 PM EDT
[#13]

ctrl-alt-delete, then look at task manager, processes tab - sort by memory

Which process is hogging cpu/mem in the process window as this is going on?

Look for the process name and then look for the corresponding executable or DLL to see the offender.

BTW, are your virus and ad-aware definition files up to date?

For FIREFOX ONLY:

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

just rebooting.  I felt like a dumbass after that.  Thank God that was before I found AR15.com.  I'd have lost

If you havnt already. power off computers, unplug power to modem and router...wait about 1 minute. Power modem first. wait a minute, power router, wait another minute power PC's. IF you have already done this. Power it all down and bypas router and get that one machine directly to modem. Them power modem, wait a minute then power PC...

you have intel application accelerator installed.. that can be a problematic program.. I would highly suggest uininstalling it.  go to the control panel then add remove programs, it is listed in alphabetical order.  then reboot the computer

once you reboot install  ewido

Also check your upload. Your requests may be taking a long time. My bro had a problem like yours and his UL was like 10kps while his DL was like 3800. DLing was great but web surfing sucked.

another thang,

you might try looking for an updated driver for your wireless network card on that compuer.  if your using the original drivers it could be full of bugs.  that is why they come out wiht new  updated drivers...   make sure you get the modem number and revision number right before you update.   if your not sure  which one post the info on the nic and we will post a link for you

i could be wrong but you really don't  need all that dlink software running in the  background.  if your running service pack2 it has reliable software built in.

just some thoughts

Your speed on one connection to one server is not neccessarily going to be indicitive of every other connection you make.   Meaning, some shit will go slower than other shit.  It depends on a lot more than your computer's connection to your ISP.
