I have a Buttload of automatic updates that are listed as program files in the "Add/Remove programs" application.  Can I remove them?

Sure if you want to open up your system to every security vulnerability that the fixes were meant to correct.

They are there just in case you have a conflict with a new update that makes your system unstable .
If everything is working , leave them alone .

Are you running XP? If so after you upgrade to XP SP2 it will strip out all your old XP updates from Add/Remove.  There is also a check box now to display or hide all post SP2 updates from view.  It gets rid of all the clutter.
