First let me say I don't know much about electronics and have read some posts on AR15.com as well as other places. However, since I don't know what most of them are saying I'm asking here for my specific situation.

Looking for a system to cover my home (2000 sf). I want it hardwired and not batteries or wireless. It's for indoors and outdoors. I want one on all 4 sides of my home and some on the inside. I want to record 7 or more days and don't need internet access.  Video like a store has and something I can also see on my computer or big TV screen. Budget is about 1500 dollars.

Recommendations?

Go with BlueIris for the management and HD cams from HikVision:

http://blueirissoftware.com/ is $50 for 64 camera license and $10 for the App if you want it

HikVision is the maker of the more expensive TrendNet and others, but much cheaper: http://www.hikvision.com/en/products_show.asp?id=7326

The cameras are $125ish each brand new if you shop around and are POE, 3MP HD. Great quality and lots of features.

To run BlueIris you will want an I5 or I7 processor and 8GB of RAM.

Also check out the WD HDD: http://www.wdc.com/global/products/features/?id=4

Thanks for all the information but that's like speaking another language. If someone asked me what AR15 they should buy but didn't know anything about guns I wouldn't tell them every part they need to build one. I'd tell them to buy a quality factory rifle like LMT or LWRC. Then I'd recommend a model based on their needs what ever that may be. Can someone recommend a brand and the model maybe. If I have to buy the parts can someone tell me which parts I need?

What are your recommendations on HikVision's wifi cameras, outdoor rated?

Any chance a Core2Duo or Phenom X4 or X6 would suffice?  I am trying to use some older stuff I have laying around.  Looking at 4-6 wifi cameras initially.

For an i5/i7, I'd rather go with a Xeon -- in that case, is clock speed or number of cores more important?

Just out of curiousity, is it standard to have your box be an NVR solely?

Yes.  That way it's dedicating all it's resources to the recording video, and there's less chance some non-related activity will cause it to crash or cause other resource conflicts.

I saw a 8 camera system at Best Buy for 600 bucks. I wonder if it would be worth it with a warrantee.
