Must be tied to one system and can not be later placed on another computer.

Motherboard died?  Too bad, MS says.  Just want to upgrade?  Buy another license, MS says.

I know many people will change OS before they will change their hardware, but I'm not one of those people.  I think noting that it is a system builder license is important.

They stopped selling those a long time ago.

It also seems that MS stopped selling standalone win7 product keys (no media) so that method is also out.

I really don't see why he should buy the retail version at $179+ each, when you can get oem disc for ~$99 each.  Yes it is not transferable, but since it will be used for 2 laptops that shouldn't be an issue.

I've never had an issue with reactivating license keys due to a hardware failure/replacement.
