Looking to buy a nice laptop specifically for writing.

Good keyboard, big screen (14-17") with good resolution but doesn't need smokin' specs. Streaming video will probably be the biggest application.

Word will be primary application.

Good battery life, heavy is OK. I won't be traveling with it very much.

Who is making good ones? I haven't bought a laptop in a long time

I like Toshiba. I have 3 and they just won't die.

Had a Sony crater 2 weeks after the warranty expired. Bummer!

I'm an IBM / Lenovo fan. Not the same as they used to be, but still good.

HP is cheaper but I haven't had an issue at all.

Dell used to be OK but I'm not too fond of their laptops anymore for some reason.

+1 It's very hard to beat a Lenovo keyboard and trackpad.

I have a several-year-old R52 thinkpad that's still kicking, and works great... Linux-friendly too.

They're the classic corporate "road warrior" laptop, and in my experience, everything may not be latest/greatest whiz-bang, but it's beefy, and travels well (eg. takes bumps and dings)

My jewish side kicked in and I got an idea pad Z560 for about 650 shipped.

As a final note, I saved 30 dollars by going to Lenovo direct over Newegg.

And noticed today it takes 30 days to ship.

That wasn't worth it.

Does Amazon prime do their free shipping deal to AK? If so, I've sometimes beaten the egg with Amazon, particularly with free shipping... and sometimes it's faster too.
