I tend to use a 40D for sports for the framerate... but our 5D and 5Dii have never given me any kind of focus problems in decent lighting (overcast outdoors is GREAT light compared to where you'll start having focus problems).

Of course, my experience is based on using the 70-200L f/2.8 lens and center point for focus (at f/2.8 or faster on the non 1 series cameras activates high precision center focus point) for 95% of my shots. Unless it is a DARK indoor/night setting, I get very quick (faster than the 40D) focusing, and very reliable.

I'd be willing to bet that if you used proper technique and settings, it'd beat out any Canon camera that doesn't start with "1D" as far as focusing speed and accuracy.

Unfortunately, I can't vouch for actual "sports" with that combo, as it is usually my backup... but for kids running around, it does the job well (ai servo) for me.

If you are talking about larger subjects (people, vehicles, planes) the AF of the 5D Mark II is plenty capable outdoors.  Now when you start talking about Birds in Flight and poorly lit gyms, the 1D Mark III is going to crush it hands down.  I have both.  I'm going to Langley AFB end of April for their Airshow and will take both the 5D Mark II and 1D Mark III, but plan to use the 5D Mark II primarily.
