I am trying to make a stand alone image (with a transparent background)...But when I save the image, it has a WHITE background.

I cut this Penguins logo out of another image using the smart tool, then I inserted it onto a transparent background.
If I open the image in Photoshop, it has a transparent background (white and grey checkerboard)...But when I save it, and open it with another picture viewer (or post it on the web), the background turns white.
What am I missing here?
