My 2 year old tossed my Nikon 8700 (digital) into the ocean this weekend.  It was recovered and then immersed in fresh water, but I fear it is dead.  I have written its obit, but I will try anything anyone can suggest to attempt a resucitation.  I remember hearing that soaking in rubbing alcohol and drying is ok for circuit boards.

Any ideas?

What were you trying to do? Photograph your gun collection?

circuit boards will tolerate rubbing alcohol (or DI water, for that matter) - some components on the boards vary (switches & potentiometers might not) - partial disassembly would help, else find a dry place and let the moisture evaporate (after a rinse to get rid of conductive salt water residue.

Give Nikon Cust Service a call too, they are usually pretty helpful

Thanks DB, I needed to laugh about this one.

Sorry about your luck, but I have had 2 cameras immersed in salt water, and it likely will never be right again.  The first was an AE1p in the real ocean, and it was unsalvageable.  The second was a T-50 that went into a saltwater fish tank.  The T50 was in my camera repair guy's hands within 20 muinutes of the incident [he lives just down the street from me] and even with "professional help" he was unable to make it work again..  And both of those were film cameras.  I imagine your Digital camera is in even worse doo-doo.  Sorry.

Sadly, it was on when it went in.

Looks like a lost cause.

Thanks for the input everyone.

You should take this as an opportunity (excuse) to buy a digital SLR!

So...what ever happened to your two-year-old?
