I keep coming back to this lens:    Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR

Would be using it on my D700.

What other lens should I be considering, that is comparable to the Nikon Lens......offerings frum Sigma and Tamron?

Looking for a "do it all lens" when "good enuf" pics are good enuf.   Have a Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-D for a walk about lens, and I like it, but looking for moar reach and stabilization.

What else should I be looking at?

Tamron makes an 18-400 that’s supposedly pretty good. I have no hands on experience though.

edit: the 18-400 is for crop sensors

A bridge camera. You can get a wider range of focal lengths in a compact design that will have at least good enough quality.

I recently used a Canon SX-60 HS on a tour of the western National Parks.  21 to about 1350 mm equivalent, with image stabilization.

It did very well, shot a few thousand images.
