You can get the Ultimate for $60 right now. I've played a bit with Lightroom but I really haven't done much with the tons (500gb) of pictures I have. LR and PS (even with CC) seem pricey for as consistently I would use it. I'm playing with it for free for the week and it seems pretty handy. Tagging isn't great though and it doesn't seem to have anything like auto face detection that would make tagging the ton of family pictures I have quicker.

I'm a pretty amateur photographer. I tend to snap a lot on vacations and such, and live with what I end up with . Currently using a Canon T6i. Favorite lens is a F2.8 18-55mm.

LR/PS is the standard by which all others are measured.

For me, $10/month is a pittance for the capabilities they give.

It sounds like you're primarily interested in digital asset management (i.e., cataloging, tagging, organizing, etc.). It's been a while since I've surveyed the market in that regard, but I suspect it will be a challenge to find a solid competitor to Lightroom in that regard - though Photoshop Elements comes close (and has facial recognition, too) even if it does come with a $99 price tag.

I agree with this.

I have been a fan and user of ACDSee for many years. I use it for picture browsing. I also use it for file organizing prior to importing the keepers into Lightroom as it is quicker than doing the initial triage in Lightroom.

ACDSee has a database for cataloging similar to Lightroom. I do not use that feature and (rightly or wrongly) think that the Lightroom cataloging is better.

The new editing abilities of ACDSee seem great. I have played with them a little, but I am so used to using other editors that I don't use the ACDSee editor for major work.
