Figured this would be the appropriate place to ask this.  Forgive my lack of knowledge but do I have this right when it comes to focusing using different sight systems for maximum accuracy.

Iron sights - the front sight post should be in focus
Red dot sights - the target should be in focus
Acog / powered optic - reticle should be your main focus

Thanks

This is the way I approach them: My 2 cents

When using iron sights I focus on rear and front individually to line them up. A good cheek rest should minimize movement between the rear and front sight once set. Then I focus between the front sight and the target. Last focus on the front sight. It's a very dynamic process of checking and rechecking alignment of all three.

Red dot focus on your target and bring the dot to it and have both eyes open.

Haven't used an ACOG, but if like other scopes they have everything in the same focal plane so both are in focus.

Yes, you're correct, but the above poster makes a good point.  Don't be afraid to focus on different things to make sure you're lined up on exactly what you want.  But yes, when you're finally squeezing the trigger, focus on the front sight, target, and reticle respectively.  Some magnified optics have a parallax adjustment knob so that you can put the reticle on the same focal plane as the target, so you can focus on them both at the same time and reduce some of your error.

Front sight for irons

For everything else, nothing should be out of focus...

I recommend reading up on parallax for powered optics. Its often overlooked and can shift point of impact significantly.
