Shot quite a bit of service rifles out at Perry; been out of it for a few years.  Looking to start again.
I see the definition of an M16-based "service rifle" has changed quite a bit - M4 stocks, carbine barrels, optics, etc.

Not sure I fully understand what they do/do not allow for rails.  I have a flat top receiver with no rails on the handguard -- should be OK, yes?
Also, I thought read the gas block must have as A2 front sight on it, but I cannot find the reference.  is this true?

Anything else I might want to know?

The handguard has to have rails on all 4 sides, continuous on top and 1/2 the length of the handguard at 3,6 and 9.

the rest of the rules are in their 2017 rulebook, service rifle specs start at the bottom of page 32.

Popular setup that differs from grandpa's A2:

Lopro gas block
KAC M5 on DCM freefloat tube or Geiselle NM rail; many still like A2 handguards
Vortex, Leupold, NightForce, or March 4x optic
Magpul UBR stock

If it stays reliable, a bolt release relocator is handy.

Edit: Alexfiggy has what I consider a proper modern service rifle that could actually do double duty.

OP,
If your handguard is the plastic mil-spec you are good to go. If it is of some other sort it must have rails at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o-clock. If your handguard is not configured this way (example: Keymod) you can add bolt-on rail pieces. This is what I did to make my legal-last-year-illegal-this-year keymod rail legal again. Rails have to cover more than half the length and must reach the foreward end.

If using other than A2 handguard, 4-way cheese grater capability mandatory

Sling must attach at distance prescribed by rule

No front sight required

LOL.

So a Mk12 Mod 1 couldn't compete.

Add cheese graters to 4 sides of the the handguard.

Mount a sling swivel at the correct distance from the mag well.

Lose the big scope for a 4.5x max.

Lose the tactical pistol grip for an A2 grip.

Lose the blasty brake for bare muzzle or A2 cage.

Lose the bipod.
