I will be doing the Peconic River one when I get back from Tiger Valley. You going to go to that one Wave?

I highly recommend a SAFS for anyone interested in highpower matches or otherwise learning the fundamentals of marksmanship.  The fist day is dryfire and book learning.  The second day you are coached by an expert shooter in a simulated match.

I'll likely be attending the one at camp Smith again, either for more practice with the AR or to try a Garand.  Anyone else going?

If you plan on going to Peconic...
I would recommend you sign up early.
They usually sell out.

The application states you have to shoot with a service AR15. I have a 16" stainless steel barrel AR with an A.R.M.S. BUIS on top. Is this acceptable for the class?

Don't think that would be acceptable seeing as you can't adjust the rear sight on that.
If you let them know ahead of time they will have AR15s' to borrow, or you can shoot with
a loaner M1 Garand if you prefer. CHECK THAT, Garands only at Camp Smith, not PRSC.

Instead of an M1-M1A(M14) can you use a AR10 instead.

No.  It is limited to US Service Rifle.

Marc,
You can't use your ar10 for SAFS...
However if you do participate in SAFS, you can compete in a match that they run every once in a while, which would permit the use of military rifles other than us service...I forgot what those matches are specifically called...but keep in mind the goal would still be to do a regular match course of fire... prone...rapid prone...rapid sitting...offhand.

He is correct,  you can use your AR10 in a regular highpower match (there is one just about every weekend starting next week).   You would enter into the "match rifle" class as opposed to the "service rifle" class.

the SAFS is strictly for Service Rifle.

Absolutely, the NY SAFS is one of very few programs of it's kind given anywhere in the USA.
I know that at the Nationals at Camp Perry they have a SAFS supported by the USMC but I
can't think of any other intensive two day program like ours. At least not in the northeast.
Fla. may have one at there big winter match, the name of which escapes me just now.
Plus you can stay on the base at Camp Smith for just $25 per night if you get reservations
early enough [NOW! hint, hint]. Call (914) 788-7395 for billeting in the B.O.Q.

I've been calling for a couple days now about the Camp Smith event to no avail. Anyone know if they're taking phone calls?

Are there still slots open?

I called on Monday just after 9am, twice, and they picked-up both times.

Edit:
For info on staying on base at the BOQ., you have to call them, (914) 788-7395,
but they don't really know about the program. For that you should e-mail Ira [email protected],
or just post here.

There is nothing wrong an AR 10 . We feel its better if you learn with the AR 15  at first because its easyer on the coaches an you if you do . its better to start out with AR 15 if you wish to shoot an AR10 later at least you will have some idea about High Power .Bruce Kraft

I Shot one of these 3 years ago, and maaan was it fun. I would suggest that any of you guys who have never had any semi-formal marksmanship training or who have never shot a high powered rifle past 100 or so yards TAKE THIS COURSE!. They are a ton of fun. Heres some of my pics from the 2 day event
