talk show guy today said someone called in claiming to work at a gas station in the area, didn't want to go on the air. Said his boss and told him they'd be raising the price 20 cents, just because they could

Had to pay $2.99 for 89 octane, Mobil Station on one of the main strips in Albany was OUT of 87 octane at $2.89 - a little over 10 gallons cost me $31 and change

Coming back into my local town - $2.91, $3.14 and $3.49!!!

Strategic oil reserve my ass, even if this shit drops 50 cents in the coming weeks, we'll NEVER see under $2.25 for 87.

I'll go take a pic of the station down the road tomorrow morning.  I would not be surprised to see $4 tomorrow, its pretty damn close to that now and, if the rate of increase for the last 2 days continues for the next 2, it will be around $4.50.

Also, there is already gas rationing and > $5 pricing in GA right now.  (unless you were referring to just our local area)

I was referring to our local area only .  I honestly don't think Jersey will see rationing, but I don't doubt we'll see $4/gallon gas...If gas gets much higher I'll be riding my bike to work (1.4 miles...I should probably ride anyway).

I went for a bike ride today in search of a locking gas cap. Neither auto parts store I went to (Advance, and Pep Boys) had any, advance sold out this morning. Both said long backorder. pep Boys girl said none of the stores have any. not sure if she meant pep boys in the buffalo area or all pep boys nationally.

Anyway, back on point. During my ride I went by the Delta Sonic on Niag. Falls Blvd and Maple and all the pumps were off. Didn't stop to ask why. I think premium was $3.09. No prices on the road side signs
On the way home they were open. With huge lines. Still no road side sign price listed and I was on the other side of the road so didn't see the price on the pump.
pics of the lines, not real easy to see due to 4 lanes of traffic. The line started over in the newly built section and went all the way over to the left. The main pump area was a huge clusterfuck even with employees attempting to direct traffic. Never saw them that busy. The roped off pumps in the first pic are newly built and not finished yet

Then I road down Maple and saw this

to be fair, they dropped the price down to $3.59 for regular (and dropped the others proportionally) a couple minutes after I took the pic, but I didn't feel like getting my camera out again.

Thos pics were taken around 4:30pm

87 Octane - $3.49
89 Octane - $3.69
93 Octane - $3.89
Diesel - $3.19

I just filled up at Stop n Shop for $3.29 for regular.  The lowest price I saw for diesel was $3.09.

This really makes me feel so nostalgic for 1979 (I should put Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)" and Tom Petty on the MP3 player).

I currently have seven gallons stockpiled and that can get me at least 450 miles.  That in conjunction with my full tank and I should not have to fill up again until well into October.  Maybe prices will have moderated by then.

The highest price around me is now $3.799 for regular but I have noticed the stations are closing early every day.

Some Gas Stations Tapped, Long Lines At Others

Some local gas station owners are worried they're going to run out of gas in the next couple of days. Some already have. The result is something all too familiar.

Gas lines stretched into the street as attendants directed traffic Friday evening at the Delta Sonic on Niagara Falls Boulevard. It was a scene reminiscent of an era some thought they'd never see again.

"[it reminds me of] the 70s, the crisis, when everyone was going crazy with the gas," said Mitch Oukajlo of North Tonawanda. "It's unbelievable."

By nightfall there was no gas left at the Delta Sonic site on Main Street in Buffalo, at a city Mobil on Lexington and a Sunoco station in Tonawanda.

The prices fluctuated so much Friday that some stations left their signs blank.

"Everybody's running out," one driver remarked.

That means motorists can either wait where gas is cheap or pay for it... big time. A Sunoco on Sheridan is charging nearly four dollars per gallon. Many local NOCO stations are charging $3.89.

That's nearly a dollar more than the $2.99 the owner of a Lancaster Mobil station is asking for.

"Our suppliers are saying we are going to up, but not to no 3-90 to four dollars like other places are," the owner said. "Sick. They're absolutely sick."

2 On Your Side's Ron Plants asked a NOCO spokesman if the company is guilty of gouging.

Plants: "80to 90 cents overnight?"
Spokesman: "That's what the market, the commodity, the price for the gasoline we are purchasing is determining as far as our pricing is concerned."

The problem, experts explain, is one of supply and demand. The hurricane brought supply down a little bit, so demand went up a little bit. This is the start of a holiday weekend, so demand went up even more. But to make matters worse, people who don't really need gas are still gassing up, making the demand artificially higher.

It's no better in Fort Erie, Canada. They're getting $1.34 a liter. In America, that's about $4.26 a gallon.

"I just hope it all ends sooner or later… sooner than later," said Kevin Valencourt of Fort Erie.

In the meantime, experts say the best thing to do to bring the price back down is what the president suggested -- do not fill up until you need to.

State officials say gas price gouging will not be tolerated and encourage you to file a complaint if you think its happening.

The industry is gouging, plain and simple. The attorney general went after some local retailers who raised the prices of generators and chainsaws when we had severe storm damage in 1998. I fail to see how this is any different in principle.

The skam the gas dealers run is that they "factor" the price of gas for what they think they will have to pay 60 days in the FUTURE, and then simply raise prices-regardless of the price they paid for their in-ground inventory. This was page one news in our local rag 2 days ago when the prices spiked. It is a screwing, with no reach around. And the rat bastards have been doing this and getting away with it for a long time. Observe higher prices during holiday weekends.

Boys and girls, if this continues, expect the economy to spiral downwards as EVERYTHING else rises in price. It has to. Couple that with a decreased sale of larger, more profitable vehicles and a reduction of new homes being built (materials will spike due to Katrina devestation and higher fuel costs), and we are on the verge of a severe economic downturn. The new house market and car sales-coupled with artificiallly low interest rates-have been keeping everything afloat. Both are in danger of listing to port.

If we see $5 gas and it stays there, batten down the hatches because a bad storm is coming.

I predict that it will go between $4 and $5/gal, and then they'll lower it to say $3.50/gal and tell you yourge getting a good deal

Most stations around here are close in price at around $3.39 $3.49 and $3.59, including the one I work at. We are going up again according to the owner.

There was a 'warning' put out by the local gov in Westchester County - They said that they would deal with gasoline price gougers. When I drove into Yonkers yesterday morning, the gas stations that were located just a few blocks away from City Hall were ALL under $3/gallon. The ones further away were much higher.

That is actually illegal and the station owner can be fined for doing that. All gas prices must be placed on the pump -at all times when you are open- even if you have to write it by hand on a piece of cardboard.

That's cool then, they can do that.

Getty(LUK Oil) reps. told our shop that they didn't have any more numbers -for the roadside signs- to give out, this was about a week before the price spike. The morning of the spike the Getty Corp not only changed all of our pump mechanisms to display $3 OR more, they showed up with a boxload of numbers for the sign; the same numbers that we requested several times over the last two months.

Ba$tard$.

My local, ~rural Mobil station reported 3 drive-offs today. They were "down" to $3.29, had been as high as 3.79/87 octane.

Most prices were in 3.49 range or under in my travels. I haven't heard of any local stations out of gas other than the ones who kept their prices below $3 during the first gas scares.

The 2.50 gas in my cans is a bargin

The State fair has had good attendance, from what I hear. SU football game (which sucked) had 45,000+ people in the Dome.

People are still driving.

Here is one of the articles I read:  MSNBC

Its a two-pager so remember to go to the second page!

Couple of quotes:

According to a recent study by automotive research Web site Edmunds.com that compared the break-even point of owning and driving a number of popular hybrids against conventional gasoline models, hybrid owners would have to drive thousands of extra miles or pay steep prices for gasoline to make up for the additional cost of a hybrid in five years or less.

Edmunds.com estimated that the price of gasoline would have to cost at least $5.60 a gallon for hybrid drivers to break even if they drove 15,000 miles a year over the five years. But even though the cost of gasoline is now at about $2.50, car shoppers shouldn’t be too complacent according to Phil Reed, consumer advice editor at Edmunds.com.

Looks like I am close to breaking even soon (though with the various government incentives I received I really did make it all back already).  $5/gallon gas?? Bring it on!

As for complaints of price gouging, I do not understand the complaints.  We are a CAPITALIST society, supply and demand.  You have the supply, you can demand what you want.  If the demand side doesn't like it, they can go somewhere else for the supply or refuse to purchase it.  Demand falls, price falls.  As I recall, instituting price controls and caps is socialism/communism and nobody seems to be in favor of those systems (unless of course they benefit the person pushing for them - sort of like the two tractors/two cows joke).
