It's that time again. Bow season started yesterday.

Lets see how everyone does this year.

Well, the season started off slow for me like usual. No deer in sight, but plenty on camera with the exception of two stands that are overrun with hogs everyday. I'm planning to fix that though

got a skunk last week.

Have skinny ass does and skinny ass bucks under the feeder.

I'm taking my son on a youth hunt this weekend at a ranch with MLD tags to cull does. The kids can also take any hogs.

Wish him luck! (He's the dude in my avatar with his first pheasant from earlier this year)

Finally got into the stand today only to get surrounded and then busted by a doe.

Oh well. There's always another chance in the morning. Hoping for this guy.

I was lucky this year. Nice little doe at 7:45am opening day!  Used the G5 havoc this season and was not disappointed.

I hadn't logged on for a few months until I made that post. The break has been nice.

I'm researching going up north for a elk hunt next year. The mountains are calling me.

Can't afford it again this year.  I've been unemployed all summer and just starting a new job next week so I won't have the time either.  Alas.  I miss hunting.  Haven't been able to in years.

My buddy and I were successful last year at my family place in Christoval, each getting a doe. Same friend and I, plus another good friend from Indiana are going to give it a shot in December. Main objective is to get the Indiana guy a good deer, which will be his first.

I'll be using the 6.5g again, batting 1000 this fat with it (sample size of 1, though:))

Well, I had an awesome weekend

Friday AM - Took the day off, dropped my 3yo off at school, went to the range to break-in my new 6.5 Grendel AR. 18" Midlength BHW nitride 3-poly barrel. After about 50 rounds of Hornady Black to break it in, starting shooting some groups. Honestly the gun outshoots me by a wide margin.

Friday PM - Head to a high fence ranch late, no hunt

Saturday AM - Get in the blind and watch every kind of animal all morning. Deer, Sika, Fallow, Red stag, Axis, etc...

Saturday PM - Get in the blind and watch every kind of animal all evening, but none of what I was waiting for..... Elk! This high fence has a small herd he's trying to kill off, but they're elusive. The owner assured me that patience was a virtue and they would come near sundown. Man did they come right at sundown, I barely had enough light in my scope to take the shot at about 75 yards. But take it I did. She ran off and there no blood trail so we couldn't find her. With it being a cold night, we just left her out and planned to go looking in the AM.

Sunday AM - SUCCESS! She was about 50 yards away from where I shot her, in some thick brush. No way we would have found her in the dark. No exit wound, but great shot. The 123 grain SST did the job.

Had to borrow a 2nd chest freezer off my sister, I just bought 100# of grass-fed beef and now I'm going to have 300# of protein-fed elk

Out near Columbus. It was a vendor-sponsored hunt, with the ranch owner being an oilfield guy. Not sure what a cow elk would cost. If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you the ranch's info, they have bull/buck prices listed on their website.

No, the Corp of engineers closed the lake Lavon properties to hog hunting during deer season.

I'm still hunting squirrels out there on occasion but this yote and any deer I get will be from private land.

Anyone know of any leases coming available next year within a reasonable (4-ish) hour drive of west Houston (Katy)?

If I can get my old man back to work (oilfield downturn has been rough), we're talking about getting one together next year and are starting to feel out the market.

Columbus area would be ideal, but I'm sure those cost a fortune.

141 3/4, 250 lbs. Taken with my bow, at a friends ranch near Columbus, TX. The Big Easy. Half his head is a big scab, missing his right eye.
13 1/4 " bases. Hopefully he will still be Gold Medal class in 60 days.
