Assuming they hold the correct FFL, they can accept it directly from, and ship it directly back to you, regardless of where you are on the country.  If you and they are both unlicensed, you can send it to them within the same state... but that depends on what they are willing to do.  I see dealers/people opt to use at least one FFL for most inter-island transactions, even though the gun never leaves the state.
