Billions of dollars wasted on the Kemper County Coal Plant that officials this week said would never be used for coal.
Does this bring back memories of the 55 million dollar 2003 Beef Processing plant failure?

Are Mississippi tax payers going to continue to pay the bill for these high-priced failures?

I was driving through there a few weeks ago, and the local radio station said it would be open in 'a few days'.

You didn't hotlink you sources, so I didn't read them- what happened?

This crap project uprooted a lot of families for nothing. I have a friend that lived a couple of miles from the plant and he had just finished building his house when they announced that they were buying all the property in that area so it can be mined. He was and still is pissed. The last time I talked to him, he was still fighting them over a couple thousand dollars, all the other families had already moved and their houses torn down. It's turned into a white elephant for him.

i was born and raised in Kemper.

A few years ago I was talking to a cousin who still has a few hundred acres of woodland there.

He had leased rights to some company to mine lignite on his place for something like $20 an acre as I recall---I'm not sure about the dollar amount.

He was excited about getting the money.

I told him that he was crazy and how the strip mining would permanently destroy his land.

He was sure they would leave it in better shape than it was currently in.

Currently it is covered in hardwood trees that have been growing for at least 50 years.
